  1. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has announced that it will establish a prestigious multimillion-dollar research center at Case Western Reserve University, effective August 1. The new NSF Science and Technology Center at Case is named the Center for Layered Polymeric Systems (CLiPS).  Professor Anne Hiltner will serve as principal investigator and director of the center. Elizabeth Christenson, PhD candidate, won the Best Poster award from the Surface Characterization and Modification Special Interest Group of the Society for Biomaterials at the World Biomaterial Congress in Sidney Australia, May 17-22, with her poster entitled “Biostability of Poly(ether urethane urea) Containing Modified Dehydroepiandrosterone” [SFB, 2004]

  14. Richard (Yufeng) Liu, PhD candidate, was selected as one of six finalists for the 2004 ICI Student Award in Applied Polymer Science (ACS) with his paper entitled “Interphase Materials by Forced-Assembly of Glassy Polymers”  [ACS, 2004]

  15. Aditya Ranade, PhD candidate, won the Best Paper Award at ANTEC 2004 (Foams Category) Thermoplastic Materials and Foams Division with his paper entitled “Structure-Property Relationships in Coextruded Foam-Film Microlayers” [SPE, 2004]

  17. Teresa Bernal, PhD candidate, won the Best Paper Award at  ANTEC 2003 Vinyl Division with her paper entitled “Stepwise Fatigue Crack Propagation in Poly(Vinyl Chloride)” [SPE, 2003]

  18. Jiong Yu, PhD candidate, won the Best Student Paper at  ANTEC 2003 Vinyl Division with his paper entitled “Quasi-Brittle to Ductile Transition in Impact Modified PVC” [SPE, 2003]

  19. Yushan Hu, PhD candidate,  was selected as one of six finalists for the 2003 ICI Student Award in Applied Polymer Science (ACS) with his paper entitled “Structural Model for Permeability of a Liquid Crystalline Polymer”  [ACS, 2003]

  20. Yu Hu, PhD candidate, won the Best Student Paper Award at SPE 2002 Vinyl Division with his paper entitled “Kinetics of Fatigue and Creep Crack Propagation in PVC Pipe”.  He also shared the 2003 Bayer Corporation Fellowship Award with Akshay.  Bayer Award is given by vote of the faculty to the most accomplished senior PhD student in the Department.
